Self-guided fishing in Alaska isn’t for everyone. However, if you’re either very familiar with the territory or have gained expert-level knowledge elsewhere, you may prefer to go without enlisting a guide. There are certainly advantages to both, but knowing these advantages might not be obvious. Alaska’s Big Salmon Lodge isn’t your typical Alaskan fishing lodge, and as such, offers both guided and self-guided fishing charters. To help show you the benefits of self-guided fishing in Sitka, we’ve put together a brief guide to help make your decision.

The Benefits of Self-Guided Fishing in Alaska

It’s no secret that anglers sometimes like to be left to their own devices. As creatures of habit, we prefer things to be done on our terms, when we want. Now that doesn’t mean that we aren’t flexible and willing to adapt, after all, that’s part of being a successful angler. However, there is something to be said about going out fishing in Sitka on your schedule, when you want, without having to be rushed or wait for other people to get ready. Electing to partake in self-guided fishing in Alaska at Big Salmon Lodge doesn’t exclude you from any of the perks like double capacity lodging, airport pick-up, or fish processing. What’s more, crab and shrimp pots are available upon request, provided the season is open.

The boats used for self-guided outings are 18-20 feet long and come equipped with windshields, covers, and can hold about four people, without making you feel like you’re in a can of sardines. Although your trips will be self-guided, you won’t be entirely on your own. All boats have the necessary fishing equipment, including tackle, navigational electronics, and safety gear. Our watercraft will await you with a full tank of fuel; however, you will be responsible for refilling the reservoir. Fortunately, there is a fueling station only three miles from Big Salmon Lodge. It may be hard to fathom, but all five salmon species are available, as well as halibut and rockfish. Many self-guided fishermen and women have had plenty of success with minimal assistance from their Sitka fishing charter.
